How does Google make money?

For all its fame in the world of searching, Google makes a majority of its income from advertising.

Of the company's $US33.3 billion revenue last year, online ads made up 97%. Google offers two ad platforms, AdSense and AdWords. They earn 70% and 30% of the advertising revenue respectively.
Increased Webform Security
image
If you have web forms on your website, you are probably aware of spam. Blocking these spammers can be important for productivity and can be done in a number of ways. One way is to separate the email address into two parts to fool bots and spammers. Alternatively, a script that moves the form action and calls it on submit can be implemented. This blocks bots from being able to access the form action.

These actions significantly reduce spam and for some users, spam is now completely non-existent. In some cases, the Captcha method has been removed altogether, improving access for users.

If you are interested in increasing the security on your website, we would welcome your contact to discuss how we are able to assist.

As always, if you have any questions, we would welcome your contact.

What's the difference between a Mac and a PC, really?

It has (almost) everything to do with the software. PCs are usually running some version of Windows, which acts as the 'foundation' upon which the computer can crunch numbers, run software, browse the Internet, and carry out any other task. Apple products run OS X, the company's proprietary operating system for its hardware, which accomplishes the same tasks in its own way.

You might think of them as two different languages. Some people speak Spanish, others speak English. An English-only speaker can't communicate effectively with a Spanish-only speaker in the same way that Mac-only software won't run on PC hardware.

Introducing The New Webmail
image
For our BC webmail clients the new webmail platform is modern looking, faster and a lot more intuitive. It is packed with new features such as mobile sync for calendars and address books, cloud storage for files and extensive domain and user management capabilities (meaning you can do alot more when using the admin features.)

Why does my laptop get so hot?

Some laptops naturally get quite hot without overheating. A hot laptop is not necessarily a broken laptop and may still be well within its comfortable operating temperature. That said, if the heat is a problem, an overheating laptop might be suffering from a number of issues. A malfunctioning battery, an overworked processor or poor airflow problems to name just a few possibilities.

If your laptop is too hot to comfortably operate for any length of time, it’s likely time for professional maintenance.

Google My Business
image
My Business is a new service on Google that connects you directly with customers, whether they're looking for you on Search, Maps or Google+

Google My Business helps you build a loyal fan base. Your customers can show their appreciation with ratings and reviews, use the +1 button to endorse your content, and re-share your Google+ posts across the web.

This is worth taking a look at. Be found by customers already looking for your products and services via Google.

Email Address Etiquette
image
Have you ever received a mass email, only to find that your email address has been shared along with hundreds of other email addresses of people you don't know? This can invite accidental misuse or worse by the recipients or a third party that has the email forwarded to them.

The solution; use the BCC option. This means the email will be delivered to your intended recipients, however, the list of recipients remains hidden from those that receive the email.

What's a hashtag?

The hashtag system is an easy way to help identify and sort tweets and Facebook posts using the pound sign. You might have noticed during TV shows like The Voice promoting tags like #thevoiceau. This makes it possible to 'sort' tweets by hashtag and group tweets from all users based on their inclusion of a given tag. Topical tweets may have one like #politics, event-based tweets might have something like #ausvotes.

Please contact us if there are any questions you'd like answered.

If you would like to talk to us about making your website more disability friendly, please don't hesitate to contact us.

The Heartbleed Bug
image
The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. Put simply, it is the bug that puts users’ passwords for many popular websites at risk.

The Heartbleed Bug doesn’t affect any sites hosted on the Reliance Web Hosting platform, as our Hosting Partner Adobe Business Catalyst doesn’t employ OpenSSL on their public facing infrastructure. This is a good opportunity however, to upgrade the security strength of all passwords used.

Windows XP Support is Ending

Posted by: Reliance Technology

On April 8, 2014 support from Microsoft will cease for Windows XP. Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system.

What does this mean for you?

It means you should take action. We recommend devices still running Windows XP are either retired and replaced, or upgraded to a new operating system such as Windows 7 or 8, so you can continue to receive regular security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks and malware.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. The team at Reliance Technology are happy to assist.
